Transporting cheese by road and rail - Emmenmatt
Point of interest
Cheese was transported across the mountains by carriers, mules and horses. But towards the end of the 19th century, cheesemongers were able to send their goods in refrigerated train wagons to Basel, and from there they were shipped to international ports. Eventually, from the mid 20th century onwards, goods trains were replaced by lorries. Today, roughly 25,000 tons of Emmentaler AOC are delivered throughout the entire world each year.
Railway Nostalgia: The "Emmental-Railways" is riding on the old line between Huttwil and Sumiswald, which is no longer open for public transport.
