Langnau and the cheese trade
Point of interest
"Langnau is (...) the natural cheese pot in which the products of the mountains land".
This is Jeremias Gotthelf's description of Langnau, which developed into a veritable cheese metropolis in the 19th century. There were legendary "cheese hunts" in which cheese producers and cheesemongers tried to outsmart each other.
When the First World War broke out, all exports were stopped in order to ensure that the country's domestic needs were met. This revolutionised the cheese trade.
