Of castles and cheese - Burgdorf

Emmental Cheese Route - Burgdorf and the cheese transport
Point of interest

Burgdorf Castle was built in the 11th century at the highest point in the town, and it was expanded in approximately 1200 AD by Duke Berchtold V. von Zähringen to create the stately residence we see today. It is the largest and best-preserved Zähringer castle complex in Switzerland, accommodating three museums and the administrative centre for the Burgdorf district.

But let us go back to cheese one more time."Emmental cheese" was first mentioned by name in 1542. Because of rival products, the Swiss Cheese Union introduced the "Switzerland" trademark in 1929, and Emmental cheese has been protected by the "Emmentaler AOC" designation of origin since 2006. Nowadays, just under 20,000 tons of Emmental cheese are exported each year.

So rest assured: you can have our cheese wherever you are. And if you ever miss us, you can always do what Boneywasawarriorwayayix does in "Asterix in Corsica". By smelling a cheese, he feels as though he has recovered a little piece of his home. That will definitely work with Emmentaler AOC too!
