Transporting cheese on water - Hasle
Point of interest
From the 17th century onwards, storable cheese was exported in ever greater quantities. Transportation on water was the most suitable option for larger quantities, and the River Emme made the Emmental region a suitable starting point for exports. Carried over the passes on mules, the cheese was then transported downstream on "Molkenflösse" (or "whey rafts") to Germany and beyond. For a long time, the loaves of cheese were transported in wooden buckets, but this was banned in the mid-17th century because of a severe wood shortage - so a considerable amount of cheese was obviously being exported! As well as cheese, schnapps, linen and animals were also important export goods.
Rivers and water has always benn of great importance in the Emmental. Along the Emmental Cheese Route there are several barbecue areas to prepare your cervalat-sausage or to take a swim in the cool water. Keep your eyes open.
